Plitvice Lakes National Park, July 2023
Plitvice Lakes (Plitvička Jezera in Croatian) is simply stunning. Added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1979, it feels like a little paradise on earth. Do go outside the season, or come early, or the paradise of about 300 square kilometres (116 square miles) is pretty flooded with tourists - especially at the beginning and for the boat rides across the lakes. But one can also choose to take a much longer hike where most day visitors do not go.
The oldest national park of Croatia
This gem in the Lika-Senj and Karlovac counties was already a national park in 1949, making it the oldest one in Croatia. It is also the country's biggest. I visited Plitvička Jezera twice in the past couple of years. All photos of this story are from July 2023.
